Week 3 - GIS Cartography

Image
For week 3 of GIS Lab, we took what we learned from the previous weeks and combine it with newer and more complex concepts and tools. We learned more in depth on Labelling class and how to isolate certain names by creating new feature classes, and also how to group layers and as a result, we created 3 very different maps of Mexico. The 3 maps include, a topography map of Mexico, a population density map of Mexico, and a map depicting railroads, rivers, and roads of Central Mexico. Each map offers a different aspect of Mexico with rather interesting information. As this project comes to a end, I will take the concepts and tools used in this lab with the ones from the previous labs and learn much more about GIS.

Week 2 - Own Your Map

For Week 2 of GIS lab, we went more in depth by creation our own maps with data given. We also worked on design skills like creation of an inset map, how to create clips within data, create labels, etc. Besides design skills, we took a closer look at metadata and how access it for the process summary. Elements like data type, publication information, time relevancy, and spatial horizontal coordinates were derived form the metadata. Getting familiar with these aspects GIS will make creating maps a lot more easy in the future.

Week 1- Overview of ArcGIS

For the first week of Intro to GIS lab class, we performed a lab covering the basics of how to navigate through ArcGIS Pro. Learning the basics pf ArcGIS Pro will help in the more complex labs to come in the near future. This lab consist of learning how to prepare, add, and explore data, understanding and using symbolization of data, and how to create and export maps. The map provided shows the finished product of the lab and the population of different world countries. In the weeks to come, different aspects of GIS will be explored and more complex maps we be shown.
